Vivinos is my current favourite visual storyteller. Great animations, great Illustrations, great
comics; she does it all!!!
(this is only a teaser of "My September". The full video is age-restricted :'3)
The first piece of media I encountered of Vivinos is My September. It has everything that hooked me
on her art: Yuri and Horror, put in a 90s anime vhs medium.
Vivinos doesn't compromise on horror: The twisted expressions really give you the heebe-jeebes. The
choice of music is excellent too! Thanks to this animation, I've discovered Nastyonas excellent
discography ^^
The trigger series of Vivinos in general has a lot of great one-off stories: Beloved and Jordan
River are one of my recommendations.
This is the first "continuous" story we get from Vivinos. It's an interesting deviation of the
trigger series: it's silly (but still has horror ofc), the song has specifically been made for this
animation and we have a deeper focus on the character themselves and their relationships too. Also
it has a particular ARG-vibe to it??
Anyway, I'd be happy to see Vivinos continue this series someday.
This is by far Vivinos' most ambitious project. And my favourite direction Vivinos has gone to.
Although I like horror, well-executed drama is something that will inevitably pull on my
heartstrings and create a unseverable connection.
The first round is built like her trigger series: It's tragic, horrific and ultimatly quite "simple"
Then, we got the opening and "round 2" and this is when the horror takes the backseat and the DRAMA
rolls in!!!
I love seeing their soul, their struggles and desires in the song being the part of the performance
in the MV, it has such a unique feel to it! We get to have insight on the characters as specific
individuals and their complex relationships with each other.
This series also has some great supplementary material, deepening the world-building and the
characters. There are additional songs, song covers of other contestants, Illustrations, all the
pop-up-merch in general and the COMICS!!!!
This, of course isn't something she could've made all alone. This was made within a team of
animators, singers, songwriters. One person I'd like to mention too is Qmeng, who is the
co-directior of Alien Stage, who probably helped Vivinos out with the boys design and much more ofc
(I'll someday give her a page too, I swear!!) So... yeah. Watch Alien Stage if you haven't. It's
currently my favourite webseries on youtube ^^
I intended to make a study of Vivinos' artstyle but I was too exausted, so there are only sketchy doodles:
Although my style and vivinos' are not really similar, I feel like a certain effortlessnes in copying her way of drawing. It's probably because of the affinity to 90s anime moe culture I too am entrenched with
I really want to look further into the way, Vivinos draws, so maybe I'll do a serious study later on (no promises tho.)
